Pets are often showered with gifts and love during the holidays, but cats and dogs in animals shelters are often overlooked. Santa Paws Drive is a project created to bring some much-needed holiday joy to shelter animals this season.

Santa Paws Drive is the first ever "virtual toy drive" and fundraiser aimed at bring the holidays to our furry friends who wouldn't otherwise get the special attention that other pets are lucky enough to get.

Organized by Dorian Wagner of YourDailyCute.com (that's me!), Salina Gannon of SuppliesJust4Pets.com and Lynn Haigh of Pawpawty.com, the goal is to raise at least $3,600 in cash, toys and treats to benefit six no-kill, non-profit shelters worldwide.

(Read more about the hugely successful "pawpawty" concept. So far, $1,000's have been raised for animals shelters all over the world.)

Donations are taken through a dedicated Santa Paws Drive shop that can be reached by visiting www.SantaPawsDrive.com. Those wishing to donate can do so by either purchasing toys or treats -- there are no shipping charges and items are priced at cost -- or choosing a cash amount of anywhere from 1 to 50 dollars.

Toy and treat donations will be accepted up until December 7 (to allow time for guaranteed Christmas delivery to the shelter animals) and cash donations can be made until December 18.

At the close of Santa Paws Drive, the toys, treats and money will be divided evenly between the six beneficiary animal shelters and shipped as Holiday Care Packages chock-full of festive and fun goodies to make the dogs and cats smile! Shipping and international duties will be covered by the event organizers.

The six deserving animal shelters chosen to receive the donation collected through Santa Paws Drive were chosen for very special reasons. Each of the organizers chose a local rescue they have close ties with, and three others came highly recommended by previous pawpawty participants.

One in particular, Cen-Tex Humane Society in Central Texas, most touched the organizer's hearts. The shelter was almost completely destroyed by a fire on November 1, and 115 animals lives were unfortunately lost. Cen-Tex has vowed to rebuild and come back stronger for those animals that survived, and those who need their help in the future.

Other shelters include Cats In Need in California, Cats Exclusive in Florida, Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre in the U.K., the Animal Welfare League of Qld in Australia and Eleven Eleven Animal Rescue in Canada.
