Law changes in France affect Online Gaming Industry

France is in the process of changing their online gaming laws and this week Parliament threw a curve at some of the biggest Internet gaming operators in Europe. An amendment will stop punters from being able to place bets in France.

This is a major blow to companies such as Betfair that allow punters to place bets. Betfair is not taking the news lying down. They are contemplating whether to take legal action against France.

"We will consider our position," said Betfair Managing Director Mark Davies, as reported in The Guardian, "It is fairly clearly discriminatory against the biggest and most competitive online operator in Europe. It is a slap in the face for the consumer."

The move by France may not even be the worst news for Betfair and other gaming companies that are allowing punters to make bets. The British government is also considering making similar changes to their gaming laws.

Sports corruption has been a main focus of European government's of late. There have been match fixing scandals that have rocked some of the biggest events in Europe, and the governments are scrambling to ensure that the corruption is kept to a minimum in the future.

The European Commission so far is behind the new amendment in France. There had been some concern that the European Union would not allow the amendment. France and other European countries such as France and Italy have been working to come into compliance with EU trade agreements when it comes to online gambling.

THe best thing would be if EU Member State agreed to allow proper competition in online gambling, with bookies/casinos/punters being allowed to cross borders freely. It is an absolute scandal that this isn't the case; a bare faced attempt to cream off profits for government coffers! Check out www.right2bet.net for an online petition calling for action on this.
