Readers here were already given a heads-up about this show. Now you get a thumbs-up.
It would not be an insult to say that all Cirque Dreams shows are similar and many of the performers and their feats are the same. That’s a good thing.
Creator and director Neil Goldberg manages to make each edition just different enough to warrant another visit; and, with a holiday theme, he has help from our tendency to perk up at the site of Christmas trappings and the sound of familiar holiday music.
As usual, the skill of the performers---mostly jugglers and acrobats---is amazing. In fact, if we didn’t already have superstars in popular music or pro sports, these folks perhaps would, and should, be our icons.
Costuming is dazzling and light-hearted. The music used as background to the performances is a mix of original pieces and familiar nonsectarian holiday pop---until the closing performance.
Perhaps surprisingly in this day of generic holiday references, the show ends with a beautiful rendition of O Holy Night, sung during the familiar ‘scarf trapeze’ act. The act is performed, lighted and costumed better than ever. There’s graceful dance quality to the performance that flows perfectly with the music and changes the tone of the show just enough to give it a balance between frivolity and reverence.
Cirques Dreams Holidaze should be part of everyone’s holiday events, this year and beyond---and it is absolutely something for the kids, as well. (But hurry, get tix soon! Show runs through December 13 only.)
