The soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division will be welcomed home next month from the Middle East by some of country music’s biggest stars including the Academy of Country Music Awards entertainer of the year Carrie Underwood.
Underwood will kick off a two-day homecoming concert event on August 14 during the Army post’s Week of the Eagles for the soldiers and their families. She will perform at Fort Campbell, KY along with Rodney Atkins, Jake Owen, and John Rich. This is the first time the bi-annual event has been stretched over two days, which are being sponsored by the radio broadcasting company Cumulus. The Week of the Eagles is a "nice way to show support for the troops," said Jane Crossman, director of marketing for Cumulus.

Underwood echoes Crossman’s value to events honoring the troops.
“People just expect there to be a military, but they don’t see faces and they don’t know names”, Underwood said. “It’s very important to just go and raise awareness and bring some cheer to people who might not get it all the time, people who are stuck in another country, away from their family and friends and kids”.
This won’t be Underwood’s first time playing for the troops. In 2006, she embarked on a USO tour of Iraq and Kuwait, which she still fondly looks back on. “People were very appreciative; people kept thanking us for being there. All I could say was, “I get to go home in a week; you don’t, so thank you”.

The concert is only one of a handful of live performances Underwood has scheduled for the summer as she is currently working on her new album for release this fall, according to her spokeswoman.
In addition to honoring troops, the 2005 Idol winner is also honoring teachers. She has recently become the 2009 spokesperson for the Teachers Count campaign.
The Salute to the Troops concert is free and open to all civilians.
