Carrie Underwood was on top of the world today as the country superstar proved she is just that; a superstar.
The day kicked off to a great start for Underwood as news broke bright and early that her newly released album Play On debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week. It sold 318,000 copies according to Nielsen Soundscan, which gives it the largest sales week of 2009 for a female album and the second-best sales week for a country release.
Play On is Underwood's third album and her second to enter at the top spot on the Billboard 200. Her sophomore release Carnival Ride also debuted at No. 1 in 2007.
Some Hearts, Underwood's debut record, entered at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 and No. 1 on Top Country Albums.
The success of Play On comes as no surprise as “Cowboy Casanova”, the first single released off the album, is the highest selling country single of the year.
Underwood performed the smash hit at the 43rd annual Country Music Association Awards Wednesday night, where she also showed off her comedic skills as co-host of the ceremony with fellow country star Brad Paisley.
As if being a performer and host didn't give the former American Idol enough to think about on country music's biggest night, she was also a double nominee for 'Female Vocalist of the Year' and 'Song of the Year'. Underwood currently has three CMA 'Female Vocalist of the Year' honors.
Hard to believe this country music phenomenon is only 26. What Underwood has achieved in four years has taken others decades to accomplish. She has nearly 60 awards under her name.
America clearly got it right when they chose their 2005 Idol champion as she has truly never stopped winning.
