Jake Delhomme after his fifth interception
As I wrote before that the Panthers wanted to extend Jake Delhomme’s contarct, it was done today. They have signed him for 5 more years which will put him under contract through the 2014 season.
Steve Wyche from NFL.com reports that the deal is worth 42.5 million, of which 20 million is guaranteed. With the extension now signed it will free up some much needed salary-cap room for Carolina. The Panthers still have 16.7 million in salary-cap locked up with Julius Peppers.
The Carolina Panthers still sign Delhomme three months after the worst game of his 11 year NFL career, throwing 5 interceptions and losing a fumble in the playoff loss to theArizona Cardinals. But coach John Fox and Marty Hurney said that Jake is still there quarterback and everyone has bad games. In 2009 Delhomme passer rating was 84.7 with 3,288 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
"Jake Delhomme is incredibly excited to be able to finish his career in Carolina," said his agent, Rick Smith. "He felt there was unfinished business at the end of last year."
The Panthers picked up Delhomme when he was unknown as a free agent from the New Orleans Saints in 2002. When Rodney Peete struggled in the season opener of the 2003 season, Delhomme got the go ahead to start at halftime and led them to a comeback victory. That same season he started every game and led them to the Super Bowl.
Since then Jake has led the Panthers to the playoffs in 05' and last season. We all now about how much criticism he gets for his choices in the game and how he can throw a temper tantrum whne things are not going his way. But remember the struggles we had in 07' when he did not play because he had surgery on his right elbow.
"If anybody wants to go back to '07, have fun," Smith said.
