Carl Edwards headed into Sunday's season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway as the defending race winner. Long out of championship contention, he was looking to pilot his No. 99 car to a Sprint Cup victory lane for the first time in 2009.
Like in the previous 35 races that made up this season, Edwards again fell short, finishing in the seventh-position.
"I’d like to be happy with seventh place, but I’m not," he said.
Edwards ended the 2009 season in 11th position.
"We needed two or three more positions to beat Kasey (Kahne) for 10th in the points," he said.
Edwards was regretful at the end of the race that he fell one spot shy of being able to speak at the awards banquet (only the top-10 receive banquet recognition.
He opted to give an abreviated version of the speech he would have given, if he had the opportunity to, following Sundays race:
"Thank you Aflac and Ford and all of my fans for sticking with us. I know it’s been a tough year, but we’ll be back next year. We’re gonna be alright. It’s just frustrating.”
