Career Change Help After 40

Career change help for people over forty has been the majority of my private practice over the last ten years, probably because I am close to 50 myself.  This group holds a special place in my heart since they often have to compete for jobs with younger, more technically savvy, and often more affordable workers in the corporate market. Here is a three-step process for how to prepare yourself for a career transition if you are over forty:

First, lower your stress level by taking actions that can boost your health and confidence:

    • Take a small action that is a positive for your health: drink more water, take a walk or become inspired to do more for yourself by visiting the site www.Realage.com
    • Call someone you trust and share your fears. Getting fears out of your head will help you move on and take positive actions
    • Take a break. Even if you are looking for work, you need to relax and recharge to gain perspective
    • Play with children or pets
    • Go out with the most positive person you know
    • Help someone who needs support
    • Learn about the benefits of optimism and your own ability to find happiness at http://www.authentichappiness.com
    • Write down three things you are grateful for
    • Take a day off from news reports
    • Breathe

Second, take inventory of your strengths and create a plan for how to make yourself more marketable, based on what you are truly interested in:

      1. Make a list of skills that you already have and want to use in the future. Make sure you leave things that no longer give you energy off the list
      2. Think about how to update your technology knowledge If you need to, find someone younger to teach you about Skype, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn
      3. Think about new interests or curiosities that you have and find ways to educate yourself on those topics

Third, reignite your imagination:

    • Spend time imagining what your dream work situation might look like
    • Consider trading in your corporate resume for doing your own thing and starting a business
    • Think about what you want to accomplish outside of work in the future and imagine how work fits into that scenario
    • Open your mind and heart to all the possibilities and make a list of options for work and lifestyle in your future

As you prepare for the change, do not forget the advantages of changing careers after 40: you bring skills, a network, maturity, experience, and a work ethic to the table that many of your younger counterparts cannot offer.

Getting career change help after forty may also include retaining the outside support you need from professionals such as a financial planner, an executive recruiter, a career coach, a therapist and/or a friend who has already made a successful career transition.
