On the Everyday You

In Chicago nature can literally be found in between high-rise buildings and concrete walkways. Seagulls, ducks and geese float on lake water waves whether calm or stormy. And if you look closely, you can see their little webbed feet paddling underneath. No matter the size or intensity, they float with the waves. When just as easily, they can flap their wings and fly away.

In this same Chicago, every day you can see what the twenty-first century face of natural selection looks like—people, walking about with stationary faces, silent expressions or noisy dispositions. Every one is equal here. And carry a bit of destiny in their pocket.

Everyday, fashionably-geared women in high heel strappy sandals and tanned legs pound the pavement to somebody’s corporate office, wearing oversized bags and hair styled like the latest photo in an InStyle magazine to answer that call five days a week.

Everyday guys do it too. They do this thing around five o clock, walking fast with a backpack slung over a shoulder and a far away look in their eye, like a rocket man.  Silently mumbling… “ Yes!” Headed straight for the gym, a weeknight game or the nearest sports bar.

Everyday people contend with, escape or postpone their realities. For a stroke of luck! You know something that may happen along the way, like a good day.

It’s called happiness. H-A-P-P-I-N-E-S-S. Just a dose, a swallow, even a teaspoon of it will hit the spot. Somebody started a rumor that it was free. Who said that? (There is absolutely no proof of that.)

The truth is, you’ve gotta work for it. Yep! (It’s true.) Happiness takes effort. This isn’t the old days when the illusion of happiness felt real. Got the great job. Drove the great car. Mommy, Daddy or some temporary insignificant other was holding your hand, telling you “You are happy!” No. This is you in the twenty-first-century having to wrestle this bad boy right down into your own manifestations.

“I am happy! I am happy! I am happy!” Write it down ten times every day.

Look, here’s the really good news. It’s already here (let it be), like a John Lennon song. Hidden inside you like a Cracker Jack surprise. Waiting like a best friend you left behind to come back too. And just like a duck or geese or any other water bird, happiness rides the waves of your life with you, not taking flight. So put forth a little effort. Then…do a little dance, feel a little love…make happiness. Make Happiness!
