Is LinkedIn for everyone?

LinkedIn, the professional networking website has over 47 million members.  During some of my coaching sessions, job seekers ask me the question "is LinkedIn for everyone?"  My answer to them is "yes" LinkedIn can be a networking tool for anyone and everyone.

Even though LinkedIn has grown rapidly and is one of the most popular networking/recruiting tools being used today, there are still a few people out there that are not familiar with the website or how to use LinkedIn.

So, who is on LinkedIn?  Recruiters, hiring managers, business owners, job seekers, industry experts, college alumni, college students, and people who like to stay in touch with other professionals.

The misunderstanding about LinkedIn that I hear often from people is that they feel they don't fit into that "professional" category.  My thoughts on that are,  it doesn't matter what your job title is, what your job responsibilities are, or what company you work for, why shouldn't you be considered a professional?

I ran a few searches on LinkedIn by job titles to see who exactly is on LinkedIn.  I put in a job title, set it to current title only,  and the search included US and International results.  Here are some of the searches I ran:

  • Receptionist - 26,780
  • Shipping Clerk - 519
  • Administrative Assistant - 100,940
  • Cashier - 12,487

It doesn't matter what your experience is or what your job title is, LinkedIn is a tool for everyone who wants to connect with others, expand their professional network, and land their next job.
