Temporary hell: when high skills meet low end jobs
Sometimes when transitioning from one career to another you will take a lesser job. These type of jobs help pay the bills but may be below your skill set.
Taking high functioning people and placing them in low functioning roles can be problematic.
The tendency for the high functioning employee is to do a higher than expected level for the job. This can not only point out the flaws of those around them in a company, but it can be frustrating to the highly skilled employee because they could probably run things more effectively.
The goal is to do your job well, but not in excess. Try to follow the rules and try not to make your own.
When you see something that can be done better, either just continue to follow the rules or be careful with your suggestions.
Keep in mind these temporary jobs are just that, temporary.
Put your energy into creating your new path. Learn from the communication, logistics and employee problems that you see and use your observations for your future ventures.
Thoughts:
1. Communication in any organization is key. Be clear about your message and if possible back it up in writing.
2. When trying to create change with suggestions, try to focus on a non threatening approach. Pointing out the shortcomings of others to change a situation is ineffective.
3. The owner rules. No matter how much instruction you get from various people within an organization, the top message is the one to follow. Different messages? Clarify and back it up with an email.
4. Deadly email. Do not put anything in an email you do not want read. This can go for cell phone messages too.
Sadly some wonderfully skilled people do not do well at low level jobs. Sometimes they are creative but not good at detail. Sometimes they are good at detail but not good at customer service.
The great thing about your own reinvention is to create a " You " that maximizes what you love to do coupled with your skills.
