Evan Lysacek is teetering on the brink of defeat after he was forced to perform 2 dances that essentially guaranteed little success on last night's Dancing With The Stars final round.
The Olympic athlete was dealt a "one-two" punch, the first blow in the form of being the only couple forced to perform a Viennese Waltz as 1 of only 2 dances.
Though the Viennese waltz is a great display of elegance and fluidity, it seldom receives the high marks, cheers and standing ovations from crowds that like to see innovation, gyration, and athleticism.
As one judge said, "good, but not great."
The second punch came in the form of a cutesy, campy, "Donny & Marie type" freestyle to the theme from Footloose that appeared to be in trouble long before the show even started.
When Lysacek balked at Anna Trebunskaya's vision for the dance, choreographer Bobby Newberry was brought in to help resolve differences between the dancing pair.
Though the 6'2" contestant gave a good performance and the routine was fun to watch, judges stated in "Week 2" that tall men struggle with "jive" type moves more than small, compact people.
The result was a routine not well suited to the athlete's body type or style, and did little to showcase his strengths.
Lysacek and Trebunskaya ended the show earning 28 points for their Viennese waltz and 24 points for their freestyle, for a combined total of 52 points for the evening. By comparison, Nicole Scherzinger, Erin Andrews, and their dance partners both tied with 55 points.
DId you know? All is not lost for the gold medalist, as each couple will dance the Argentine tango on Tuesday's show. When 1 couple is eliminated, the 2 remaining pairs will compete head to head to win the coveted Mirrored Ball trophy.
