Colcord Ridge campground - photo by Tony Padegimas
This campground is designed with large RV’s in mind, as it is near AZ288 (aka Forest road 512), and features generously proportioned campsites. All of these campsites, in turn, feature tables, fire-pits and, at 7200 feet of elevation, expansive views of the valleys that surround the ridge.
While the campground is located in a healthy stand of ponderosa mixed with some white and Douglas fir, the ravages of the 2002 Rodeo Chediski fire are visible in any direction. An interpretive sign (near the vault toilets) provides some information about the fire and the resulting ecologic recovery.
Colcord Ridge has no host and no fee. Plan to bring your own water and haul out your own trash. While more friendly to RV’s than most Forest Service campgrounds, it would still be unwise to bring in an RV longer than 32 feet. A sewage dump facility is located at Ponderosa Campground on Highway 260 located 15 miles east of Payson. There is a $5.00 fee.
The campground lies less than a mile east of AZ288 on forest road 33. See the Canyon Creek area main page for information about the general vicinity.
