If political clout is measured by how much and often other candidates on a slate and Maryland PACs are willing to write you a check, then Democratic City Councilman Robert W. Curran District 3 has reached the platinum-plus level.
The fact that Curran comes from a local political dynasty that reaches back to 1923, and considering his niece Judge Catherine "Katie" O'Malley is Gov. Martin O'Malley's wife -- you begin to understand why Curran doesn't have to knock on doors to raise campaign funds.
A little help from his friends
According to campaign records from the University of Maryland's Center for American Politics and Citizenship, for the 2010 cycle, local Political Action Committees, or PACs, funded 22.31% of the $41,000 Curran raised.
Only legendary Councilwoman Agnes Welch came close with 21% of her campaign being financed by local PACs. The majority of the other council members fell in the single or low double digits.
But one of the most interesting factoids about Curran's campaign financing is how much came from other elected officials on the slate like Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Gov. O'Malley's campaign accounts.
From 9/07/2007 until 10/12/2007 Curran's campaign coffers received three checks for a total of $9,600 from Rawlings-Blake's campaign account and $3,000 from Gov. O'Malley's account. -- for a grand total of $9,900.
It's probably fair to conclude that the Curran political dynasty is still intact.
