San Francisco supe makes push for city to sell marijuana

The next place to buy marijuana? Perhaps if one San Francisco
supervisor has his way. Sabatini photo.

Legislation proposed by a San Francisco supervisor would make the city by the bay the first city with the Mary Jane.

Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi proposed legislation on Tuesday that would create a pilot program for the city to get into the medical marijuana business, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Mirkarimi said he has asked city attorney to craft a measure that would allow the Department of Public Health to distribute medical marijuana.

Federal law does not recognize California's legalization of medical marijuana. But U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said last month the federal government would no longer conduct raids on legal medical marijuana facilities, a move Mirkarimi believes opens the door to the city getting more directly involved in the sale and distribution of legal, medical marijuana.

"We're spending much more money keeping marijuana underground, trying to hide a fact that is occurring all around us," Mirkarimi said. "Now is the time to take responsibility for something we've deflected to others and to test our ability to take responsibility."

San Francisco is also the home turf of state Assemblyman Tom Ammiano who has legislation in committee in Sacramento this year to legalize all marijuana sales in the state, a move that could make the state more than $1 billion in annual tax revenue and save the state the same amount from its prison costs.

Mirkarimi authored legislation in 2005 that regulated medical marijuana dispensaries in the city, which led to the closure of more than a dozen such facilities. His latest foray into legal marijuana is not designed to put more facilities out of business, he said, but to "alleviate the burden on neighborhoods," according to the Chronicle's report.

Doesn't marijuana kill more people than alcohol, tobacco, and war combined?

Where are you getting that bogus information? I'd like to see your research. or are you just TRYING to get people worked up over your dumb comment?

Even it it were lethal (which it is not), shouldn't an American citizen be granted the freedom to decide what to do with thier own body so long as it does not harm others? or should we stick to the communist ideals of "I don't like it, so none of you can have it" ? It's bullshit.

    Good

No, your information is backwards, marijuana does not kill people, its safer than alcohol, tobacco and war. It is a natural herb, and nothing more. I'm sure you got this information from someone who has decided to try and put out as much bad publicity against marijuana as they can because THEY don't like it and therefore believe no one can like it. Its the same people who feel they are superior to others because of their own ego. Nothing new here. Some people really need to grow up.

The first commenter, 'good' is sorely mistaken.

It takes cute kittens, volvo cars, multi-vitamins, and organic food COMBINED to equal the killing power of marriage-uh-wanna.

Marriage-uh-wanna only equals the deaths from alcohol, tobacco, and war combined, not exceed.

    *shakes head*

Keep up the good work, Scott, don't let the idiots discourage you. I hope you don't even notice this.

Marijuana is illegal, Alcohol is legal. I am only doing my job when I arrest you, its nothing personal. You voted for Obama to give you change, I voted for Bush cause I didnt want Obama's chump change, like the chump change he gave you ill stricten people that need marijuana and all you other pot smokers. You see Obama likes cocaine and marijuana himself but he wont change anything for you people. We just received enough funding for 28 more police officers at my department from Obama's stim package. I had just sat down with a nice cold beer after just getting home and relaxed from a long 12 hour shift and enjoying the overtime, as I turned the t.v on I seen Obama stating " I have more important issues at hand, then the marijuana issue." Well, guess what America, we now have filled all 28 positions just like all the other towns/cities/states. Obama may not have time for the marijuana issue but WE SURE DO!We have enough man power to ensure marijuana smoking/growing/ingesting users will be arrested and LEGALLY PROSECUTED! I don't care what color you are and I don't care who you voted for or how sick or hurt you are, I just know that when I am arresting you for breaking the law, that I am doing my job. I once arrested a Jane Doe that was convicted of growing marijuana and later on that year she hung herself with a note in her pocket. She blamed the polititions. Obama doesn't have the power nor the authority to ever do such a thing as legalizing marijuana in any shape or form. So to all you unhuman trogladite pot smokers, you can keep watching cheech and chong as your dreams go "Up in smoke!"
