It seems like a long time ago that the Golden Bears women's basketball team was competing in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Tournament--it hasn't.
The Golden Bears finished the 2008-'09 season reaching new heights as a program and although they were expecting to lose a couple of thier star players, confidence was high due to their top-five recruiting class poised to take center stage. Unfortunately, before the season could start, Cal had lost three of thier returning veterans to transfer, one of their top recruits to a medical condition, and another veteran to a knee injury that is slow to heal.
All of the roster flux has left Cal playing seven freshmen, a junior, and two seniors. And that my friends, all adds up to a season of disappointment.
The Golden Bears (6-8, 0-3 Pac-10) will get better as the season expires, but unless they get real good soon, we'll all be talking about how good they should be next season...with another top recruiting class on the way.
Right now, only Washington State (5-10, 0-4 Pac-10) has been worse than Cal in Pac-10 play. This coming Saturday the Cougars will visit Haas Pavilion, and that's when we'll find out how good, or bad, the Golden Bears will be this season.
Then again, a victory over Washington (8-6, 3-1 Pac-10) Thursday night could serve as plenty of reason for hope too.
