All but one of the undrafted Cal Bears have an NFL destination

Six former Golden Bears found themselves in a unique situation following the 2009 NFL Draft.  Instead of selling themselves to teams, like they'd done leading up to this past weekend, some of those teams were trying to sell the players on their organizations.

All but one of the undrafted Cal players have already signed with NFL teams.  The lone holdout is fielding interest from at least three teams at the time of this writing.

While speaking with Tony Fleming, agent for Worrell Williams, he told me that three teams that utilize the 3-4 defense have shown interest in signing the inside linebacker.

Fleming told me that they may know where Williams is heading by Tuesday.  Williams finished his Cal career with 36 starts and 246 tackles that ranks as 11th all-time.  In 2008, he had 64 tackles (25 solo), five tackles-for-loss, and one sack.

Will Ta'ufo'ou was signed by the Chicago Bears.  One of the Bears' unsung heroes over the last two years, he helped pave the way for two 1,500-plus yard rushers during his career.  An ultimate team player, he'll be expected to bring his toughness to the NFL on special teams.

It's likely he didn't get drafted due to the phasing out of fullbacks at the professional level.  I should have more on Ta'ufo'ou on Tuesday, so keep checking back.  Really, all you need to know about Ta'ufo'ou can be found from a statement he made at the beginning of the 2008 season:

For us fullbacks, we're like an undercover job.  We do everything for our teammates. We do it for our self-pride.

Another player I'll have more on later is long snapper Nick Sundberg.  His agent, former Cal quarterback Ryan Tollner, told me today that Sundberg will be traveling to Carolina to play for the Panthers.  The situation couldn't be better either.  None of the long snappers on the Panthers' roster have any game experience, making it a level playing field for the rookie from Cal.

For those of you that don't know, Sundberg handled the long snapping duties his entire career at Cal without missing a game.  That should help him when it comes to competing in camp.

One of the first former Bears to sign a free agent contract with an NFL team was linebacker Anthony Felder.  Felder signed with the San Diego Chargers, a team that runs a 3-4 defense like the Bears.  Felder told me that Chargers linebacker coach John Pagano called him in the sixth round to let him know that they wanted him.

Yeah, actually, the linebackers coach called me around the sixth round and told me that he, himself, and the other linebacker coach were making a push in their war room to get the team to pick me up with their seventh round pick.  He said they had to, you know, go at it with the offensive coaches who wanted to bring in a receiver, but they were going to try and pick me up in the seventh and obviously it didn't work out that way.

That receiver was LSU's Demetrius Byrd who suffered a serious auto accident last week that left him in critical condition.  Some had him listed as a second or third round pick until the accident.

Felder had other options besides the Chargers.  Cleveland had contacted him prior to the draft, expressing their interest in signing him if he went undrafted.  After the conclusion of the draft, he also spoke with Minnesota and Oakland before choosing to play for San Diego.

I wasn't able to contact Nate Longshore, but I did speak with his agent Erik Berkhardt.  Longshore was in talks with the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday night, but things fell through Monday morning.  Longshore ended up agreeing with the Miami Dolphins instead.

Berkhardt said that Longshore has a better shot at sticking with the Dolphins than he did with the Bengals, explaining that he would've been competing against Carson Palmer's little brother, Jordan, for the final QB spot.

The Dolphins released John Beck Monday and even though they have Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, and just drafted Pat White, Longshore will still have every chance of making the team.

Rulon Davis signed with the a team that he grew up rooting against.  As a San Diego Charger fan, I'm sure he probably never imagined himself wearing Broncos orange.  By this Thursday, not only will he be able to imagine it, he'll be wearing it.  He told me by phone on Monday that he's a Bronco and he'll be gunning for the Chargers now.

When I called Davis, I started to express my condolences for not being drafted when he stopped me, "What are you sorry for?  Everything turned out the way it's supposed to turn out man."  He then continued, "I'm not sorry.  I'm going to a great situation and...I'd rather be drafted, but still find undrafted free agency with the Denver Broncos and that's an opportunity.  And that's all I ever asked for."

It's this positive outlook that convinced me that the fans of the AFC West, are going to hate seeing him play against their favorite team for a long time.

Davis was another player that was the topic of debate in an NFL war room on draft day.  New York Giants defensive line coach Mike Wauffle did his best to convince his superiors to take Davis in the sixth, but he lost to the secondary coach.  San Francisco, Carolina, and Jacksonville all expressed interest in signing Davis after the draft.

But you know what?  The draft is over with and I'm not even thinking about that no more, and I'm just ready to move on with my NFL career.

Words to live by.
