Bikes banned from Mammoth's Volcom Brothers Skate Park

After many months of debate, the Volcom Brothers Skate Park has been closed to bicycles, effective last Tuesday, August 18.

The Town of Mammoth Lakes Tourism and Recreation Commission has been working on this issue and trying to reach a solution that would satisfy both bike riders and skateboarders. However, after extensive consultation with the Town's insurance authority regarding potential for joint use, it was determined that there were no valid options for pursuing the joint use idea.

According to locals, bicycles tear up the skate park in ways that a skateboard does not. With the Town being low on funds, dollars for extra maintenance of the park are hard to find. Young children on bicycles also create a threat for themselves and skateboarders when they are riding around the edge of the bowl and skateboards pop out at the top.

Jane Baer who championed the construction of the skate park in memory of her son Jeff Anderson, is helping the bikers with a Putt-Putt fundraiser on September 11. Money from the event will go toward building a new bike/skate park and for maintenance of the existing Volcom Brothers Skate Park. The event will be held at Sierra Star Golf Course from 3-6 p.m. Admission is $25. Call 760-920-1137 for more information. http://www.visitmammoth.com/calendar/index.cfm?action=daily&cdate=9-11-2009
