If anyone doubted that Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayward would have an impact on Team USA at the FIBA U19 World Championships in New Zealand, than they were very mistaken.
Gordon Hayward was named to the tournament's Best of the Best team. He was joined on the team by US teammate and Kansas freshman Tyshawn Taylor.
Hayward averaged 10 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game during the tournament. He was third on the team in scoring, second in rebounds, and fifth in assists.
He also finished the the tournament shooting 41 percent from the 3 point line (12/29). He also showed his shot blocking ability by finishing second on the team with 10 total blocks.
Hayward's high for points was 20 against Canada in the seventh game.
Shelvin Mack was named the honorary captain for Team USA in the tournament. He averaged 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.
Mack shot 35 percent from the field during the tournament including only 22 percent from the 3 point line (6/27). He was fourth on the team in assists.
Mack's scoring high was against Egypt when he scored 14 points.
Hayward and Mack helped lead team USA to its first gold medal in the U19 World Championships since 1991.
Mack and Hayward return to Indianapolis, where they will take time off before they head to Europe with their Butler teammates early in August.
