Hot tech buys this week: phone options abound, but TV prices inch upward

It looks like the Sunday newspapers are rapidly becoming the travel circular delivery mechanism of choice. Both Tourism Ireland and the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism had big inserts in our paper this weekend. But on the electronics front, not much monumental happened in terms of pricing this week as far as we could tell from the circulars. But there was news. Prices on some TVs actually went up in February, right in the maw of the retailing Armageddon that was the demise of Circuit City.

How nutty is that?

As far as real shopping trends, it was a week of this and that. Verizon is getting that Skype kind of vibe: Verizon, which has been feeling the flat-rate heat from discount players like Sprint and Boost Mobile, is now offering unlimited minutes to any five numbers, even landlines, for those connected to Verizon or Alltel.

Recycling seems to be a retailing tactic now. Best Buy is “tossing in” delivery, hook-up and recycling for any HDTVs of $999 and up.

And here is Staples offering a $50 rebate on any recycled printer. Units start at $100. Not bad.

Target seems to have fallen in love with the idea that it is a dollar store. It is a statement on our times that a brand that once bought out an entire issue of The New Yorker is now reduced to selling Tide in its pricey printed adverts. But what can you do? Geeks are getting some love, though. DVDs are going for just $15. Check them on page 12 of the weekly ad.

Radio Shack is pushing a nice deal on the LG Vu, which will give you mobile access to all the NCAA basketball tournament games, for just $30 with a two-year agreement on the AT&T network.
