The Walmart, Salesforce, and Expedia websites were brought to their knees last night by a rogue denial of service attack. The attack appears to have been levied by a distributed bot network, and directed at Nuestar, a major UltraDNS service provider.
According to a statement from Neustar, the DDoS attack targeted the Palo Alto and San Jose, California networks. All websites came off life support and became responsive again at about 7:00 PM Pacific Time. The origin of the attack remains unknown.
This is the third denial of service attack on a DNS provider this year. The attack crippled the ecommerce websites at a very busy time of year, preventing many from completing last minute gift shopping.

Two other IP anycast DNS providers were also attacked at the same time. UltraDNS was the only provider to have been taken down. It appears as though the other DNS providers have already dropped the client that caused the attack, but UltraDNS is still serving the client by either planning to fight it further or not knowing what domain is being attacked.
Change that... UltraDNS has terminated this user as well. Everyone is clear in DNS world. Holidays should be smooth.
