Isa Dick Hackett, the daughter of author Philip K. Dick, is suing Google for what she believes is infringement on her father’s work. Dick’s most well known movie, Blade Runner, was placed in the early twenty first century and featured a model of androids codenamed Nexus Six.
Hmm…Androids named Nexus. Is anyone else starting to wonder if the marketing people at Google are science fiction fans?
Ms Hackett certainly is. In the lawsuit, she claims the names are snagged straight from her father's science fiction novel and subsequent movie.
“Google takes first and then deals with the fallout later," she told the London Times in a recent interview. "“In my mind, there is a very obvious connection to my father’s novel. People don’t get it. It’s the principle of it. It would be nice to have a dialogue. We are open to it. That’s a way to start.”
Google has responded to the lawsuit by claiming it was simply using the word in its original sense and definition – as a place where things converge.
What do you think? Coincidence or has the Google marketing team been watching too much sci-fi?
