Over the last few years, Mozilla’s Firefox web browser has gone from a niche browser for geeks to a worldwide mainstream phenomenon. Each new version built upon the project’s original goals of speed, security, and reliability. The plucky browser found its way into businesses, schools, and homes – but it just couldn’t compete with Microsoft Internet Explorer, which came pre-installed with each new PC sold.
Until now.
According to StatsCounter, which tracks website statistics on over 3 million websites globally, Mozilla’s Firefox has now edged out Internet Explorer to become the most popular web browser in the world.
Although It seems likely that Mozilla will continue to make gains against Internet Explorer in the short term, many wonder how it will fare against Google’s Chome browser going forward.
December 2009 has not been a good month for Microsoft – besides being accused of copying the copyrighted works of a competitor, it announced the next version of Windows Mobile would be delayed another year, and the city of Los Angeles announced it was ditching MS Office for Google Docs.
No wonder Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is so mad.
