Those of us who grew up watching The Jetsons on the Saturday morning cartoons are getting more disappointed with each passing year. By 2010 we would certainly have flying cars, robot housekeepers, and people mover systems everywhere, right?
This week we at least heard of some progress. Coming soon to a California Lowe’s home improvement store near you are do-it-yourself solar panels starting at just $99. How cool is that?
"Homeowners are paying more attention than ever to their utility bills, and the first step to saving energy is tracking where it's going," Nick Canter, Lowe's executive vice president of merchandising said in the announcement. He said the solar panels are also available online at Lowes.com.
Lowe’s will be selling two types of solar panels. The $99 Sunforce panel is limited to charging car and boat batteries, cell phones, and MP3 players. To generate household electricity, however, you will need the $893 Akeena panels. Their modular design allows homeowners to start by installing one panel, and then add more as needed.
Ok, so maybe it’s not like George Jetson’s flying car – but at least its progress, right?
