Many pundits expect the Republicans to make significant gains in the 2010 Congressional elections. Among those seeking to challenge Henry Waxman--the Democratic incumbent in California's 30th congressional district--is businessman and Republican David Benning of Woodland Hills. The 30th congressional district covers west Los Angeles, including Beverly Hills, as well as portions of the San Fernando Valley, Calabasas, and Westlake Village.
Waxman, a UCLA law school graduate, was a lawyer for a few years before becoming a California legislator in 1969. He was then elected to Congress in 1974 and has served ever since.
Waxman recently made headlines by demanding that executives from some of the largest companies in America, including AT&T, Verizon, and Caterpillar, appear before a Congressional subcommittee on April 21 to defend their public disclosures and announcements regarding the anticipated costs of compliance with the nation's new health care law and that their companies may no longer be able to afford to provide health insurance and prescription drug coverage to their employees under the new law. Many have criticized Waxman's demand as an attempt to silence and bully those he believes to be critical of the new law.
As set forth on his website (www.benningforcongress.com), David Benning has been a successful businessman and job creator for years. Benning told me government action should be reviewed through a "jobs friendly filter" and that our representatives "who have never had a real job, or at least not one for 40 years," do not understand you "cannot bully a company into creating jobs."
Benning believes the federal government should "get out of the way of the country's entrepreneurs" and that tax increases and unpredictable future tax rates stifle growth, hurt the economy, and cause job losses. If elected, Benning would support a reduction in corporate taxes and efforts to overturn the health care bill or correct its "ill effects."
The GOP primary will be held on June 8, 2010.
