Jeff Mohr's wife was in a rear end collision back in 2001. For Jeff, the only logical thing to do was spend the next five years inventing and patenting a product that would protect Mrs. Mohr and others from another accident that might be even worse. And so the Superbumper was born. (and its sisters Sparebumper and Bumper Shield).jpg)
Mohr Manufacturing, a Burnsville-based manufacturing company, specializes in making spare safety bumpers that prevent rear end collision damage. The Superbumper covers your hitch and is 12" wide by 6" high. The Superbumper sticks out 4" beyond your receiver hitch. Mohr explained the details to me in an email:
"The Superbumper crushes 2” when hit. It has a duel compression system so it can be pinned out for maximum protection or pinned in closer (still energy absorbing) for approach angle clearance during off-road use, tight garage spaces or to avoid being detected by backup alarms. Because it's energy absorbing it won't transfer crash energy from a rear end collison directly to the occupants."
According to stats on the Superbumper website, the most frequent highway accident is a rear end collision. And women are twice as likely to suffer whiplash. It doesn't matter if that person behind you is tailgating, talking on the phone, or is just a plain bad driver, rear end collisions can be deadly. This might be something that could help you out, especially on Minnesota snowy roads.
I'll leave you with one thought. Why does everyone HATE tailgaters, but no one thinks they ARE a tailgater? AnybodY?
