Brown Medical School holds groundbreaking ceremony for Warren Alpert Medical School

Brown Medical School breaks ground for its new facility in Providence
Brown Medical School breaks ground for its new facility in Providence, Rhode Island

Brown University has big plans for the new location of its medical school. On Monday, April 26, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new home of the Warren Alpert Medical School took place in the Jewelry District area of Providence.

Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons and Edward J. Wing, M.D., dean of medicine and biological sciences, were accompanied by guests including Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline to usher in the beginning of a $45-million renovation project that will provide a central headquarters for the medical school.

Brown University has the only medical school in Rhode Island and the new building will feature lecture halls, an anatomy lab, and case study and seminar rooms. Brown is incorporating as much of the existing building structure as possible in the transformation as part of its commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices.

The brand new Warren Alpert Medical School will allow the class size at Brown Medical School to increase from 96 to 120 students. This is great news in light of the fact that the American Medical Association has estimated that by 2025 the United States will be 150,000 doctors short of the number needed.

The project is expected to be completed in August 2011.
