Nanotechnology is defined as the science of creating machines and devices at the atomic level. The technology takes its name from the nanometer, which is a particles that measures at one billionth of a meter. Atoms measure at two to three nanometers, while most of the nanotechnology products measure somewhere between one to a hundred nanometers.
Lehigh University conducted its third symposium on the technology and its business applications. The university has been a leader in Nano for Business and has its own Lehigh Nanotech Network (LNN). The speakers ranged from leaders in industry, government and education; while covering such topics as market trends, funding, and scientific applications of the products.
Lehigh is one the country's leading educational resources on nanotechnology research while securing much funding for various projects on business applications. Meanwhile Pennsylvania has its own initiative that seeks to use the technology as a cornerstone for statewide economic development.
The state's economic vision combined with the university's knack for obtaining both private and public funding could turn out to the next gold mine for the Lehigh Valley area and its future companies.
