Private Jets and FBOs

If you have ever wondered what kind of security private jet passengers have to go through. The answer is none!

This is one of the advantages to flying in a private charter jet. There are no snaking security lines. No shoe removal. No placing your laptop in a restaurant dish removal tub.
It is a hassle-free experience.

Fixed Based Operator (FBO)

A Fixed Base Operator (FBO) is an area located away from the commercial terminals at large airports like McCarran in Las Vegas. It is a much smaller facility and acts as a service center and a waiting area for people flying on private jets. It is a place where managed aircraft are maintained including Gulfstream and other private jets.

Larger airports areas may house more than one FBO. Make sure you know where your FBO is prior to the day of travel. (Of course, private aircraft may also be maintained at smaller airports.)

The Tail Number

When you go to meet your plane, know the tail number of the aircraft you will be flying on. This is an identifier similar to an automobile plate number.  And like a license plate, the tail number is unique to each aircraft. The first letter of the identifier indicates the aircraft country of origin. For aircraft from the US the unique identifier is the letter “N”.

When you get to the FBO, the personnel there will ask for the tail number which will allow them to match you to the pilot. S/he will be informed of your arrival and you will be escorted to your jet.

Security

When do you need to show up? Not two hours ahead like on a commercial jet! You can show up at the scheduled departure time and be ready to fly in no time.

As on commercial flights, the pilot is the ultimate authority on a private jet. A pilot or another crew member (if any) can command you to undergo a security inspection just as if you were on a commercial plane. Realistically though, most of the time you will be allowed to board without going through any in-depth security check.

If you are on an overseas flight, upon your return, Customs will come to the FBO to check your passports.

If you are worried about your car, FBOs and small airports have places to store it until you return from your flight.
