Belted Sheer Chiffon Tunic from Forever 21 [$34.00].
As promised, today The Debutantes get to learn about making the lingerie trend work for them and their style. You probably wouldn’t think that someone with a more sophisticated style would be able to wear a trend that involves lingerie, but it is possible. The key to making a lingerie-centered outfit work for a Deb is to make sure your girly accents are extra girly and sweet to balance out the in-your-face sexiness of say, a corset top. Still not sure how to pull off the look [much less where to wear it]? Keep reading.
Let’s start with your main garment: Your bustier. It should be simple and versatile, like this bustier from Forever 21 [only $17.80]. It should be something you can wear with a number of different outfits and on a number of different occasions. More importantly for you, Debs, it shouldn’t be the focus of your outfit. You’re a lady, and a classy one at that. You’re not one to flaunt the goods or attract a lot of negative attention to yourself. That said, for you to wear an ensemble that includes a bustier, it should be worn in a manner that says “Look, but don’t touch.” Here’s how:
Everyday Casual
Try wearing your bustier with a sheer shirt over, preferably one with a bit of a print or pattern to it. This will allow people to get a peek at what’s underneath without showing off too much. Worn in this fashion, the bustier is almost no different than any other camisole or tank top you might wear underneath a sheer shirt. Try finding a floral chiffon top like this one [$22.80] and mixing it with a cute pair of shorts like these [$13.80] for a fun, flirty outfit you could wear just about anywhere on your day off.
Work
As long as you remember the rules for wearing your bustier with a sheer shirt, even this lingerie look can be appropriate for work. It might help, however, to wear a bustier similar in color to the shirt you’ll be wearing over the top of it. This will help your sexy lingerie piece to blend a little more in the work place, and keep you from being sent home to change. Try wearing your bustier with a fun polka dot print like on this adorable blouse [only $10.50!] and a blazer like this one [$24.80], then finish off your look with some great trousers like these [$22.80] and get ready to be the envy of your office.
Party
One thing that can be said for sure is that if you wear a bustier to a party, you will quickly become the topic of all conversation. A good way to get noticed while staying somewhat covered up is to wear your outer-undergarment with an ultra conservative, ultra sheer tunic over it, like this one [$34.00] with a great pair of leggings like these [$26.00]. The bustier and leggings will show off your curves, while the tunic will keep the outfit sweet and toned down. And in this case, the belt will help show off just how tiny your waist is. You can’t lose.
Date Night
A true Deb would never go out on a date with little more than a fancy bra top on, so wearing something more lingerie-inspired, rather than the lingerie itself, is important here. Try to find a top that resembles lingerie of some kind or has elements based on that look, like this sweet little babydoll top here [$15.80]. Pair with the leggings from the party and a precious sweater like this one [$17.80], and you’ll be sure to get invited to meet his parents.
Accessories
When you’re ready to put the finishing touches on your new look, try to stick to more simple accessories. An outfit with lingerie incorporated in it already has a lot going on, so there’s no need to bling it out. Most of the outfits seen here today don’t work well with necklaces because of their high collars, but you can always add a little sparkle on your ears, like with these covet-worthy bow studs [$4.80, and comes with 2 other pairs]. When it comes to your kicks, try wearing shoes that compliment other elements in your outfit, like these awesome peep-toe booties with bows [$26.80]. Also great for this outfit is a simple black clutch like this one [$15.80]. It’s especially great since it’s convertible and you can wear it with or without a strap. A good way to get extra mileage out of a clutch like that is to wear it with a strap during the day, then tuck it in and hold it like a normal clutch at night. You’ll feel like you got 2 purses for the price of 1! And last, but not least, don’t forget to add a little something to your hair. Headbands, like this one [$6.80], are the perfect accessory for an outfit full of the delicate little touches you Debs love so much.
Now you ladies are ready to hit the town, or rather, the mall. Next up for some advice, your exact opposite: The Bad Girls. …But don’t worry, BGs. It’s probably not the kind of advice you’re used to getting.
