As noted yesterday, the week of 4th of July is prime time for wine bargains. And his week’s email special at Arrowine is one of those great buying opportunities, particularly if you like to buy good, Spanish reds by the case.
Sabor Real Toro 2006, from the excellent Spanish growing area of Toro is 100% old-vines tempranillo. The warm Toro climate – where the hot days and cold nights are said to help grow smaller grapes with thicker skins (for a higher skin to juice ratio) – makes for wines of considerable color, flavor, power and longevity compared to tempranillo-based wines from the more famous Rioja region.
The 2006 Toro was aged in French and American oak, 50% of it new oak, according to Jay Miller of The Wine Advocate, who awarded the wine 90 points in both the February and August 2008 issues. The Bodegas was started in 2003, yet all of the wines are produced from estate owned Tinta de Toro vines, most of them over 80 years of age.
“Purple colored, it has an excellent, slightly roasted perfume with notes of wood smoke, scorched earth, espresso, and blackberry," Miller writes. "Full-bodied, fat, and well-endowed on the palate, the wine has gobs of spicy, forward fruit, excellent balance, and enough structure to last for another 8 years.“
Miller calls the wine “a spectacular value in Toro that totally over-delivers for its bargain basement price,” referring to the estimated release price of $13 per bottle. Arrowine’s emails special is $10.99 for single bottles, and for case orders of 12 or more, a spectacular $8.99 per bottle.
“This is one to buy by the case,” writes Miller, without even knowing about Arrowine’s sale.
