Mesa Verde
The top 10 places to visit in the US, on a budget, is a list that I started as my family and I began our summer planning. As summer has continued on, we have visited some locations not yet on the list, one of which is Durango, Colorado.
As a girl who has spent most of my life in the deep south, Durango is such an escape from the norm. A town proud of it's long history yet perfectly ingrained with the present, surrounded by mountains rivers, streams, and true beauty. Downtown is a hub-bub of activity both during the day and at night, with activities including small town type shops, antique hotels, a variety of restaurants for every taste, bars for the over 21 crowd, a train station, park, cold stone creamery, theater and more, it's like taking a step back in time without losing all modern day amenities.
There is so much to do in and around Durango; river rafting, hiking, visiting Mesa Verde national park, the silverton railroad, and more. How to do this on a budget just requires a little creativity. Although it is quite expensive to ride the train you can get almost the same experience driving yourself to silverton, a scenic 50 mile trip up the mountains, by just stopping at the train station and looking around, as well as taking pictures by the train and with conductors at the drop off in silverton. River rafting can be experienced for as little as $15 per person, Mesa Verde is a couple of dollars for the entire day, and a truly magnificent experience.
So if your traveling on a budget and ready for an adventure in the great outdoors without losing modern day amenities, Durango is the destination for you.
