Every good Cub Scout knows that Pinewood Derby season is upon us. Lowe’s is here to help you with your car. The event is called Dremel Derby Days. The last one for this season is scheduled for February 20, 2010. This is a nationwide event and your Arvada Lowe’s is participating. This is an annual Boy Scouts of America collaborative with Dremel Tool.
You will learn the tips and tricks you need to have a really spiffy car for your Pack’s race. In the past lots of elbow grease and sandpaper were used to fashion cool creations. Now the Dremel tool makes creating your special edition vehicle much easier.
There is a really cool kit available to create your car. It contains an official BSA pinewood car blank (this is a critical part to run your car in most pack races,) the wheels and axles for the car. The basic car is about $4 at your local Scout Shop. Dremel has added an 18 piece Dremel tool accessory kit for about $20 including cutting and sanding bits (Dremel Tool not included). Please note that the kit does not include any patterns for making the car or paint and stickers. This is where the Scout’s creativity enters the picture. There is a great online Design Your Car page as well as a PDF Dremel Derby construction guide. From Lowe’s website it appears that a basic Dremel tool will run you about $45 but there is a 10% coupon offered at the workshop for tools and accessories. The scout will be issued a patch as well for attendance at the workshop.
Even if you do not have the opportunity to go to a Dremel Derby Days Event at your local Lowe’s be sure to check out the online Dremel Derby Days cars and instructions on line. Even an old hand at these cars can learn some great tips.

the North Jefferson County Scouting District is Gateway. they have provided a set of guidelines for you cars and the pinewood races. However you choose to create your Pinewood Derby car be sure that you make it simple and keep it fun.
