Use coupons and donate to the San Antonio Food Bank

The San Antonio Food Bank has released its list of the 12 most wanted foods for donations this summer, to help support giving to needy residents across the city.  If you're interested in donating, here are some coupons that can help you stretch your donation budget.

The San Antonio Food Bank accepts donations during business hours at its headquarters at 5200 Old Highway 90 West.  Click here for directions, or call (210) 337-3663 for more information.

Coupons to stretch your giving budget

Peanut Butter -- Sign up for the Jif newsletter to have printable coupons for peanut butter sent straight to your email.

Cereal -- Go to coupons.com for a slew of coupons available on Fiber One cereal, General Mills brands like Cheerios, and Kellogg's brands like Raisin Bran and Frosted Mini-Wheats.  Or pick up a coupon for 75 cents off Malt-O-Meal cereals.

Cereal is often a loss-leader for CVS and Walgreens, so check the week's best grocery deals to see where to use your coupons.

Tuna -- Canned meats are a popular donation choice because they're so shelf-stable, and they provide vital sources of protein that can be expensive for low-income families.  You can sign up at the Starkist website for printable tuna coupons sent directly to your email address.

Beans -- If you want to donate canned beans, coupons.com has a printable coupon available right now for 60 cents off two cans of Old El Paso beans.  Old El Paso sells for around a dollar at HEB, so you could give two cans for about $1.40.  Bagged beans rarely have coupons but are extremely affordable -- most pound bags of beans sell from 69 cents to $1.29 at HEB and Target.

Rice -- Again, coupons.com hooks you up, with two separate coupons for Minute Rice products.  Or you can register at the Uncle Ben's website and print off a 75 cents off coupon.  White rice can keep on pantry shelves for up to two years, so you might consider just donating a bag from your own pantry.

Mac and Cheese -- Kraft has been giving away coupons for its classic Mac & Cheese over on the Kraft First Taste website.  Some coupons have even been for a free box!  Other recent freebies on this site have included coupons for free Oscar Mayer bacon and Ritz Crackers, so it's worth the moment it takes to register.

Chili -- There aren't any chili coupons available online right now, but Wolf Brand Chili and Hormel often do post coupons, so check back at those websites from time to time.  Or find out which coupons are available at the Coupon Clippers.

Canned Stews -- Again, no coupons available online right now, since these sorts of foods tend to be more heavily promoted during colder weather.  You can keep an eye out at Sunday Coupon Preview, though, to see if any canned stew coupons might be arriving in an upcoming newspaper.

Canned Soups -- Coupons.com has coupons right now for both Chunky's Soup and Progresso canned soups.  Or pick up some private-label brands the next time you're at the grocery store; the generics at HEB and at Target are both usually under a dollar a can.

Canned luncheon meats -- Print off this 55 cent off Hormel pepperoni coupon, and watch for deals on beef jerky and other shelf-stable meats at the grocery store.

Full meals in a can or box -- Hormel currently has coupons available for its shelf-stable microwave meals.  When you're at HEB, keep an eye out for store coupons featuring Buy 2, Get 1 Free deals on brands like Marie Callendar's and Healthy Choice.  You can also grab this printable coupon for 75 cents off any Wanchai Ferry Dinner Kit.

Pop-top food items -- Again, keep an eye out for anything shelf-stable and non-perishable.  Sun-Rype has several coupons available at their website, ranging from buy one get one free deals to $1.50 off printable coupons.  Or fan Lindsay Olives on Facebook for printable coupons on olives, or pick up this printable coupon for $1 off on pistachios.

I am glad more people are aware of this great service project. Coupons can go a long ways. There is a website called grocerycouponsforfree.org that has a list of military bases you can send your expired coupons to. They also have a list of food shelves that you can send your unexpired coupons to. Both are great service projects and grocerycouponsforfree.org does a great job in explaining these programs and you can get many coupons there as well. I hope more people get involved with these types of programs. These coupons go a long ways to helping people reduce their grocery bill!
