Thrifty shoppers looking to save money on their beer and wine purchases are in luck -- the Associated Press reported today that the budget grocery chain Dollar General has begun selling beer and wine in some of its stores in the Southeast.
Dollar General spokeswoman Tawn Earnest told the AP that the company intends to eventually sell beer and wine in up to half of its 9000 stores. "The company is exploring opportunities in locations where there is a customer demand," Earnest said.
Grocery staples now make up to 70% of Dollar General's total revenue, unlike other chains like Family Dollar or Dollar Tree, which rely on food and drink purchases for only about half their total revenue. Dollar General is also making a name for itself in the couponing community, with specials on their Facebook page meant to lure thrifty grocery shoppers into their stores.
There is no current word on when beer and wine may show up on Dollar General shelves in Texas, or the variety or selection likely to be offered.

Wow, I think that's huge news! If Dollar General starts selling beer and wine, that'll be good for it as a budget grocery chain, driving in more traffic who will see the heavily discounted prices & perhaps continue to shop there. And a lot of more traffic. I didn't know Dollar General had 9000 stores.
Beer and wine at your Dollar General store? Wow! Dollar General is really moving up in the world. LOL
Big chain, this might help traffic.
Great news that Dollar General is another option when it comes to beer, wine and other liquors.
so sad, aren't there enough liquor stores. Dollar General has really lowered their standards. =(
