May is International Improve Your Business Image Month, when individuals are encouraged to evaluate and improve their business images, as first impressions are everything.
Due to the recession, excessive layoffs have left many of us searching for new jobs, especially in Los Angeles, where the unemployment rate reached a staggering 11.3% in March, over 2% higher than the national rate.
When attempting to snag a job in such a tight market, experience, resumes and skills are clearly essential. Still, one’s image is also very important. And if it comes down to you and another equally qualified candidate, you don’t want your inadequate business image to get in the way of success.
Even after you get the job, whether you’re giving a presentation, attending a conference or even conducting an interview, it is important to look your best and represent yourself and your business accurately.
These tips will help you present an impeccable image while maintaining your personal style and saving money.
Don’t Overdo Do it
Going overboard can take others' attention off of you and put it on your clothing. You are the main event, and your clothing should enhance that, not take away from it. This goes for hair and makeup as well.
Cover Up
You don’t have to wear a smock, or be ashamed of your body. But wearing to little can distract others just as much as overding it can.
Basic overview: no mid-drifts, under-garments should not be exposed, skirts should be below mid-thigh.
Dress the Part
The saying may be "You are what you eat," but when it comes to making a first a impression, you are what you wear.
Your clothing should reflect your work environment, the business event you are attending, or the job that you are interviewing for. "Clothing that works well for the beach, yard work, dance clubs, exercise sessions, and sports contests may not be appropriate for a professional appearance at work," (unless of course, you work at one of these locations) writes Susan M. Heathfield, in her article Dress for Success: A Business Casual Dress Code .
Whether you prefer punk, preppy or urban style (or any other look), remembering these key elements is vital to projecting a professional business image. As long as you keep these tips in mind, you can add in your own personal touches for an extra flare to your business image.

Comments
Thank you for touching on this subject. Many of todays job seekers and employees seem to believe, that they can show up to work or an interview looking as if they are going to the prom or a night club, or any which kind of way and they expect for people to take them serious...
Excellent article Chrystal
