Part two: sketch your dog

Part one of how to sketch your dog went over tips about how to plan out your drawing, so this second part will give you inspiration for adding color to your illustration.  Do you need a few tips on how to draw dogs?  I highly recommend heading over to your local library and checking out a few books on had to draw dogs, and other animals.  Also, you could practice drawing dogs by watching online tutorial videos.  The best practice for drawing a picture of your dog is to just grab a pencil and paper, and to start sketching your conception of your favorite doggy.  Since you are not being commissioned to sketch a picture of your pooch, there are no rules about what this illustration should look like.  Follow your heart and draw what is true to you.  If you are unhappy with your first sketch, remember you can always start over again.  Drawing is the perfect budget craft because most people have the supplies needed, which in the most basic form consist of pencils, colored pencils, and paper.  You can buy artistic quality drawing paper and pencils for your sketches, but there is not requirement to do so.

When you are ready to add color to your illustration, you need to decided what medium you would like to use.  For this project colored pencils were used to color in the picture of Buster, and I recommend this method for those who would who prefer a medium that is not messy or expensive.  Of course, if you are going to buy high end colored pencils your illustration is going to cost more money to create, but you can always use the school variety that are sold at the grocery or dollar stores.  Honestly, I feel my illustrations look just as nice with high end and school variety of colored pencils, and as a budget crafter I tend to mix and match these anyway.  Take a look at the video and the slide show to see how the illustration of Buster the dog was created with pencil and colored pencils.
