Dede Scozzafava, New York Assemblywoman and the Republican candidate  in the Special Election for New York's 23rd Congressional District has suspended campaign operations.  Her battle was not against the opponent Democrat, Bill Owens but against a third party, Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman. See AP article here

According to an article published in thehill.com , Owens has even overlooked Scozzafava and as of late most campaign ads have been attacking Doug Hoffman of the Conservative Party.  The special race is to choose who will represent the District after Rep. John McHugh was appointed Secretary of the Army in September.

This race has splintered the Republican party.  Newt Gingrich came into the district to campaign for Scozzafava.  Sarah Palin endorsed Hoffman.  According to Real Clear Politics, the race is now a dead heat with Owens at 36% and Hoffman at 35%.

Scozzafava's failure to be a viable candidate means two things.  First, the Conservative base of the Republican party have become serious about their candidates and serious about winning races.  Second, now, the Republican party must embrace Conservatism and have an ear to their way of thinking for the upcoming races in 2010 or risk splintering the party and losing upcoming elections.  Now will they listen!

It's better for conservatives to have the Democrat win than a DIABLO like Debe, who would have been used by the Dems and the media to marginalize conservatives as "extremists". But here's hoping that Hoffman can pull off the victory!

Thank you Dede for you "wise" decision, though I suspect it was more a case of not wishing to be embarrassed. I can not understand why Newt endorsed you but I suspect that he has gone "around the bend". Looks a lot like Bush 41 cozying up to Obama and saying he did it because he hated seeing his son demonized during the time he was President and was starting to see the same thing happening to Obama. There's a problem "George the Elder"...........Obama started demonizing your son early in his Presidential campaign, he never quit, and he's still at it. Are you brain dead George? Oh, I forgot, you're the turnip who rubs shoulders with and yucks it up with Bill Clinton, of course you're brain dead!!
