10 Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee wrote a letter to President Obama and predated it, so that it would be addressed to the President on Veterans Day. The letter was drafted to urge the POTUS to come to a decision in regards to troop levels in Afghanistan.
They write:
“It has been two months since you were given General Stanley McChrystal’s assessment of our success in achieving the national security objectives in Afghanistan you outlined so boldly and correctly in March.”
The Senators discuss supporting Obamas “counterinsurgency plan in March” and then again “when you deployed General McChrystal to lead the command in Kabul.” They highlight that the security situation is deteriorating and that immediate support and resources are needed for success. Over 68,000 American soldiers are currently serving in Afghanistan and “the sooner we can provide the reinforcements and resources they need, the safer and more successful they will be”.
Throughout the letter, the Senators continuously emphasize the need for success in Afghanistan and that “success in Afghanistan will emerge, as it did in Iraq”. Thus allowing “Afghans to build a better, more peaceful future” and allowing “America’s fighting men and women to leave Afghanistan with honor”.
