National Weather Service confirms tornado raged in Riverdale

Less than 48 hours ago the National Weather Service declared an EF-1 tornado did hit the Riverdale section of the Bronx on Sunday prior to 3pm. Wind speeds in excess of one hundred miles per hour hit the Hebrew Home, a Geriatric Center in Riverdale as well as many neighboring structures. According to the New York Times and Eyewitness News seven people were injured as a result of the severe weather that started on Palisade Avenue. Shattered glass and uprooted trees resulted in property damage and power outages as well.

The racing Riverdale winds in excess of a hundred miles an hour continued through the Bronx border town for approximately .06 miles and created a path of destruction about 100 yards wide. The storm continued to make its way through the Bronx and into the sound where one boater is still reported missing.  The powerful weather system finally moved out to sea after passing through Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Nearby residents were shaken but not stirred by the twirl of the tornado and continued their Sunday rituals as if just another strong storm hit the area.  Others ventured out to record nature's nastiness. Many created their own weather service online with their own home video and reports on the phenomenon. The last time a tornado hit the borough was September 2, 1974 according to Kirstie Hettings of Accuweather.com and the Bronx, although scarred, was able to recover.

Con Ed plans to have the power up and running by Tuesday. One Bronx resident was heard saying "No huff and puff can blow our Bronx down!"
