Looking for something special to do this Memorial Day weekend, that won’t cost and arm and a leg? Cabaret singer Vickie Phillips returns in “Songs of Life, Love and Other Moments” at Don’t Tell Mama Saturday May 29th @ 6pm. I caught Vickie’s show two months ago and was impressed by this diva. Ms. Phillips, should be teaching those up and coming performers and even seasoned ones how to stage and prepare a show. Her show has a flow, that is wonderfully unexpected. She starts off with Songs of Life/Celebrate, a joyous medley by Neil Diamond and Steve Lawrence, that sets up where we are going. With Dory Previn’s, 20 Mile Zone she seduces us with her wit and charm. I now have a new favorite song, the Leiber and Stoller, Humphrey Bogart, which in Ms Phillips ample arms becomes a tongue-in-cheek song about obsession. Not only can she sing but she can write. The emotional, Love and Illusion and the heartfelt Time are her creations and us leaves us wanting more of her music. For fans of Vickie’s, she does not disappoint. In her set were the Gerry Dieffenbach numbers, who is also her wonderful arranger and pianist and the Jacques Brel numbers that made her adoring public weep at. The staple of Don’t Tell Mama’s, Sidney Myer may pop in to do a charming rendition of The Bare Necessities from the Jungle Book. If he does you are in for a treat! Vickie’s, journey includes the wonderful In My Own Lifetime from The Rothschild, becoming an anthem for today’s world. This is a show where not only do you see Ms. Phillips moments but you are gently lead into a few musical moments of your own. The staging by Bob Ost was perfectly fitted to Ms. Phillips and together made it a night to remember. “Songs of Life, Love and Other Moments” is a perfect and cool way to spend a holiday weekend.
