The 21st Annual Gypsy of the Year show will be presented Monday, December 7 at 4:30 p.m. and Tuesday, December 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Palace Theater, 1564 Broadway in New York City. The event is the culmination of six weeks of fundraising done by shows on and off Broadway. The competition to collect the highest amount of money is friendly but the goal is serious: raising money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids (BC/EFA) which is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.
Why go see this show?
1. You will see some of the most talented people perform all in one show. Chorus members from Broadway and Off-Broadway shows put together original material and dance up a storm on the stage with a few surprises here and there. For example, last year, the presentation from Equus’ troup was quite a show stopper. And “The Broadway Bailout,” a comedy satire, had no dancing, but it was very funny.
Shows scheduled to present include Billy Elliot, Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago, Hair, Jersey Boys, Naked Boys Singing, Newsical, Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins, Rock of Ages, Superior Donuts, West Side Story and Wicked. This year the casts of Avenue Q and In the Heights will come together for a joint presentation.
2. The show is a competitive variety show. An award for the best performance is given. Last year’s winner, The Lion King, performed a dance that left the audience breathless.
3. The money collected from the ticket sales also goes to BCEFA’s fundraising.
4. Seth Rudetsky will be hosting the event. You’ll laugh at his stories as he keeps the show moving.
4. The Broadway community is like no other. Where else can you see such a large assembled group of talent performing on their own time, giving it their all, for such a good cause?
Visit the BC/EFA website for more information about tickets. If you cannot go to the show, consider making a donation. This group does excellent work. You can also access video of last year’s show on their website which was tremendous!
