WTTG leads the pack in local Emmys

     Broadcasters from around the region gathered at the Ritz-Carlton in NW DC Saturday night for the 52nd Annual Emmy Awards and Gold and Silver Circle Ceremony.  The event is sponsored by the National Capital Chesapeake Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and encompasses the District along with the states of Maryland and Virginia.

    Locally, WTTG took home 10 Emmys, winning in the categories of Daytime Newscast and Continuing Coverage for the Inauguration of Barack Obama.  FOX 5 reporter Tisha Thompson received Emmys for her stories on Rescue 911, Taxi Discrimination and Planet Aid..  Steve Chenevey  won in the News Anchor category as did WJLA's Leon Harris for the second time. WUSA's Brett Haber was named Best Sports Anchor for the fourth year in a row,  He also received an award for his annual sports holiday poem in the category of News Writing.  

     WJLA won 6 Emmys; WRC 5; with both stations winning in.the Evening Newscast category. WJLA's Jay Korff took home two Emmys in the Weather and Live Reporting categories.   WUSA received the nod for Weekend Newscast bringing their total to 4.

          Among local cablers, Comcast Sportsnet won 8 Emmys; Discovery won 7;  and MASN received 4 awards.  The Redskins Broadcast Network and the Washington Wizards each received 3 Emmys. 

     WETA's Washington Week in Review won the prestigious Board of Governors award and their local special Washington in the 60s won an Emmy in the category of Historical Documentary. Maryland Public Television received 6 Emmys for their productions, winning in the categories of Arts/Entertainment Specials and Cultural Specials. MPT's long running Bob The Vid Tech series won several awards including one for Bob Heck, host of the children's program  

    Outside our region the big winners were WBFF in Baltimore with 8 wins; WTVR in Richmond with 6 awards and WAVY in Norfolk with 4 Emmys.

     The Gold and Silver Circle Awards were also part of the Emmy ceremony, honoring those who have made significant contributions to the television industry over the periods of 50 and 25 years.  Longtime WTOP-CBS producer/director Jim Silman was inducted into the Gold Circle and the Silver Circle inductees were Glynda Bates, studio supervisor at WETA; WRC photographer Jay Alvey; and WCVE's Virginia Currents program host Lee-May Lily.  

     The Ted Yates award was presented posthumously to the family of WRC News and Sports Photographer Don Stumpo for his contributions to the region's television news and public affairs.
