Director Guillermo del Toro quits 'Hobbit' film: Will Peter Jackson direct the prequel?

Hollywood director Guillermo del Toro said Monday, May 31st that production delays have forced him to quit the planned film of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, a two-part prequel to filmmaker Peter Jackson’s blockbuster trilogy Lord of the Rings. (As most of you know, J.R.R. Tolkien is an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.)

“In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a state date for filming The Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life,” del Torro told a Lord of the Rings fan website.

“After nearly two years of living, breathing, and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures,” he said.

According to Hollywoodnews.com, only hours after Peter Jackson’s representatives said Jackson would not direct The Hobbit, it appears that the Academy Award-winning director might be reconsidering. At least that’s what Lord of the Rings fans are hoping. Peter Jackson is brilliant and is the perfect choice (of the fans) to direct The Hobbit.

The Dominion Post reported that Jackson said that while he’s actively searching for replacement directors, he admitted that hopping into the director’s chair would be a possibility. “If that’s what I have to do to protect Warner Brother’s investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore,” Jackson said.

He did add, however, that he is under contract for two new films already, and that the rival studios “may not let me out of the contracts.”

We all know that the world of The Hobbit is Jackson’s domain. Now that del Torro has moved on, the pieces are in place for Jackson to triumphantly return to Middle Earth and turn The Hobbit into the blockbuster with ethereal scenes and fantastical worlds that fans crave. Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J R R Tolkien's The Hobbit, a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy The Lord of the Rings.

Jackson, who directed the Rings trilogy, has already signed to serve as executive producer for The Hobbit.  Jackson reportedly will be meeting with studio officials to discuss replacements this week. Expect an announcement sometime soon. I, for one, would love to see Jackson at the helm of this Hobbit movie.
