Dorene was raised in South Texas. She served in the Air Force for 12 years, then worked for a nonprofit family counseling agency while she completed her degree in science writing. She then quit work to pursue a writing career. She is a member of the Virginia Writers Club, the Virginia Screenwriters Forum, Poquoson Toastmasters and Mensa.
