With the majority of celebrities heading to the tent, or various other locations around town, I decided to visit ‘Nolcha’ which is an up and coming fashion week show on the upper east side. Billed as the “Home for Independent Fashion Designers” they showcased their fashions, eco-friendly line as well as accessories. I thought of it more like ‘the show within the show’.
Based at the Bohemian National Hall, they welcomed a diverse range of talent from around the globe with collections ranging from Anaessia, KabukiU and Pizzuto from Australia; Jessica Joyce from the Netherlands; Canadian brand Sodalicious; Columbian designer Afanador and European brands Agnes Valentine, Christina Crawford, Dora Abodi, Sado, Siskova and Quiet Riot. Closer to home the American based designers 43.46 aggaj, emeDesigns, Elda De La Rosa, MinnaK, Rock Hard Atelier and Nadia Nour. I will be sharing my interview with MinnaK, a New Yorker with a beautiful RTW and bridal line, in the coming weeks.
This season included two collective runway shows; each featuring a group of designers exhibiting ten looks each. The Capsule Collective runway show is an international selection of six independent fashion designers, who focus on unique basics and innovative fabrics for the consumer that wants to supplement their wardrobe with new fresh designer labels. The Luxe Collective, introduced brands that suit the lifestyle of affluent and influential consumers. Special Occasion fashion played a large part in the presentation including Avante Garde mastery and sassy swimwear, all under the same standards of fit, fabric and finishing.
Finally there was the Accessory Lounge, providing a diverse mix of talent from bold and exotic, to classic and quaint. Designers include BettyLou Jewels, Eenamaria, Gida Bavari, Joann Huth Collection, Marijoli, Maleku, selve, Schander and Shamila.
So were their celebrity sighting, absolutely but more importantly, there was fashion, and good fashion. I dare say that next year, you just may see a few of them in the ‘big tent’.
