Q&A with Republican Deon Long: Republican for Congress District 24-FL

Republican Deon Long is anything but your ordinary congressional candidate.During his speech to the Space Coast Patriots, a grassroots conservative group in Brevard County, Long laid out his campaign platform, which includes:abolishing the federal income tax & Internal Revenue Service, implementing the fair tax and a return to the gold standard.

""The two most insidious things in America are property tax and income tax ," Long said. "The progressive tax code is enslaving America. It's killing the American spirit and pursuit of American dream."

Long credited the Space Coast Patriots for advancing similar conservative causes at the local level. One week earlier, candidate Tom Garcia addressed the Patriots, and he was among the full room of attendants at last week's meeting.
He believes groups such as the Space Coast Patriots will be the key to conservative victory in 2010.

"We're always on our side of the 50 and I'm tired of playing defense. I'm tired of playing defense."

Following Long's speech, I followed-up with some more questions for Mr. Long. I started with social issues and we also discussed issues specifically relevant to central Florida.

What's your stance on abortion?

Deon Long: I believe that life begins at conception. The only circumstances in which an abortion should occur are in cases of rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

Governor Crist just approved the start of the Florida Sunrail project. What's your stance on the state-supported rail system?

Deon Long: I am adamantly opposed to Sunrail. Sunrail is another case of central government planning foisting of delusional vision on the taxpayers of in Florida.

What's your stance on school vouchers?

Deon Long: "I am a strong advocate for school vouchers. I have been a part of the school choice movement for over ten (10) years. Chairman of Children’s First, a group that gave scholarships to underprivileged children to attend private schools."

WHAT DISTINGUISHES DEON LONG FROM THE OTHER CANDIDATES?

Deon Long:"I am a strong advocate for the economic revitalization of the U.S. economy and the burnishing the “American Dream.” The adoption of the Fair Tax,return to the Gold Standard, passage of a balanced budget amendment, promoting free trade and repealing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act will prove the environment for that revitalization.

I am a staunch believer in states’ right and the devolution of power from the Federal government back to the states.To get back to the our Constitutional principles we must get this progressive tax system off the backs of the American citizenry. We must also halt our inflationary monetary policy and deficit spending.
