The Boy Scouts of America won the National Award on Friday for their spectacular float entry in the 2010 Tournament of Roses Parade. The National Award is presented to the float that has the best depiction of life in America, past, present or future. The float's theme was, "Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey".

It is the first float in 60 years entered corporately by the BSA. Friday's float was preceded by 300 Eagle Scout recipients proudly marching in the parade.  As well, Eagle Scouts carried the trophy banners in front of all other award-winning floats, as they have done every year since 1966.

Designed by Michelle Lofthouse, the float depicted some of Scouting's favorite activities; canoeing, camping, hiking and climbing.  There were several large merit badge medallions hand crafted by Scouts, along the side of the float. Observers were treated to two working waterfalls and a 27 foot zip line. Riding atop the float was the 2 millionth Eagle Scout, Anthony Thomas.

The award-winning float was created from natural materials running the gamut from poppy seeds to pampas grass. The cliffs and rocks were partly created with lettuce, sesame and poppy seeds. The body and wings of the bald eagle were fashioned from buffalo and pampas grass and curly seaweed. The Boy Scout emblem is covered with flax seed, clover seed and sesame seed. Flax seed is used as a background, edged by chrysanthemums and gold clover seed.

That was a cool float, and a well deserved recognition. Good job to all the scouts that took part in the project!
