Miguel Cotto: 'I will continue fighting'

The event is over, but not the fighting spirit.

Miguel Cotto has let it be known that the loss to Manny Pacquiao may have dampened his spirit, but not his desire to fight on. When asked by HBO's Larry Merchant if he would continue to fight, Miguel responded, "Yeah. I will continue, I will continue fighting."

Merchant also asked Cotto if Manny's propensity to throw many punches from various angles was the difference in the fight. "Yeah, it really made the difference, he jabs and throws. Makes alot of difference because I didn't see from where the punch was coming. I didn't protect myself from the punches."

Cotto and Pacquiao put on a great show for the first four rounds. It was after that point that the fight was controlled by Pacquiao. Manny's nonstop punches allowed him to floor Miguel twice.

The battered Cotto fought on gamely, although he did hear some boos when he danced away from Pacquiao during the later rounds. The volume and angles really did a job on Miguel's face. To Cotto's credit, he took the best Manny could throw at him and tried to make it to the final bell.

Pacquiao has become the complete opposite of what many old timers said was impossible, bring your punch with you when you move up in weight. One theory is that he has grown into his more natural weight, instead of draining himself to make the 130 to 135 weight limits. Add to that his amazing foot and hand speed and we are seeing one man who is surely destined to make anyone's alltime great list.

Critics had said that they were interested to see how Manny would stand up to a full fledged welterweight's power. He passed this test with flying colors also. Cotto landed heavy shots on Manny, only to have Pacquiao spring back with punches of his own.

The only thing left for Pacquiao is Mayweather. It would be hard to imagine that there is a fight any true fan would want to see more, including Freddie Roach. Roach stated so much immediately after the fight.

As far as Miguel Cotto, he will continue fighting. This comes as great news to the fans in Cotto nation. And let the reality of his fight be told. Early in the fight Cotto looked great. So good , that it is hard to imagine that any other fighter could have beaten him on that night. The one possible exception just happened to be the man in the ring with him.

When asked to compare Pacquiao to the other top fighters he had faced, Miguel said,"I fought every body, you know Miguel Cotto comes to boxing to fight the biggest names. I'm always available and Manny is one of the best boxers we have of all time."

Apology and Correction

I owe all boxing fans, but mainly Miguel Cotto and his fans, a sincere apology. In my last story ( The truth behind the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather PPV numbers ) I mistakenly added Miguel's name to a list of former Floyd Mayweather victims.

Believe me, that is not something that I would ever wish on such a fine gentleman and true warrior as Miguel Cotto. I had meant to type in Juan Manuel Marquez, but thank you to the 8 million people that let me know about the error. I am my own worst critic, so believe me, no one gave me more hell about the mistake than I did myself.

Cotto would look forward to fighting either Yuri Foreman or a rematch with Mosley. He has still big fights/opportunities out there waiting for him. Just find a good trainer in the person of his Uncle Evangelista or Beristain.

In order for Cotto to build his career,he must get a decent trainer, I strongly believe that had Cotto had his Uncle or any decent trainer, the fight against Pacquiao would have been more competitive and maybe the outcome would have been different. Miguel Cotto used all the advantages he possessed in the first and second rounds, after that he switched his gameplan and the fight shifted to Pacquiao. Miguel Cotto is in no need of heart and fight, he has it in him, but he needs a trainer, and if he doesn't acquire one, Cotto will surely be a fading star. Cotto stop being stubborn and learn about the importance of a trainer and guidance!!! It surely has done pacquiao good.

For Mayweather’s sake, he must not fight Manny. Otherwise, he will suffer a dislocated shoulder. Pacquiao will bombard his defense with left and right anti-matter power punches that could cripple the alleged “Money” man. Please, Floyd, keep your unbeaten record, DON’T FIGHT PACQUIAO!

Cotto is the most noble, classiest, and best fighter manny pacquiao has ever fought. In boxing, you'd see real professional people appreciating greatness and no excuses. Diaz and Cotto took their defeat with pride, while delahoyas camp except for b-hop which I also admire, (oscar, ricky, marquez, mosley) are all a bunch of whining losers. I'm a pacfan but I'll be supporting cotto and diaz as much. B-hop is the smartest analyst of the sport, and he speaks without bias even though he's part of goldenboy.

Miguel Cotto will remain a good fighter in his own craft and in the eyes of boxing. He earned the respect of many,. here in the Philippines we trailed his fights against the likes of many known fighters.

Miguel dominated against Zab Judah more convincingly than Mayweather, but that was before, I think Flord Jr. really ducked Cotto in the first place. Floyd was'nt really sure he'd win against the Boricuan beast that is why, he was afraid to take the risk and retired.

Miguel, a fight against collazo or hatton would be great, and say, a redemption match for floyd gayweather after pacman will give him his first loss? Just a tip though, go back to basics, get a REAL trainer! trainers like freddie roach and ariza will bring out the best in you for sure and you'll be a greater force than you'd imagine. roach doesn't change your style to fit him, he just enhances your given strengths, tries to correct your bad habits and gives you upgrades in your arsenal. I don't wanna see you fade like the other arrogant boxers who thought they knew everything. Rethink your career!

Cotto is a warrior man. He looked really good the 1st 4rounds. Manny was just better. Gotta give it 2 the man. Manny doesn't gets props by Ricans but I give him his due. I didn't like the whole idea of a catch weight though. If its 4 the belt I wanna come in at what I feel good in. Cotto came in at 146 for the Clottey fight. I know. So 1extra pound shouldn't be 2 bad but you never know how the 2pounds iff 147 affected him it if did. With that being said, Cotto signed up 4 it so it is what it is. He suffered his 1st lost. (I don't count Margarito, he's a cheater. He gets no respect from me) As far as he goes in the future, I would love for Cotto 2 beat the crap out of Margarito but he's not putting no money in that cheaters pocket. I agree. I heard rumors that Cotto might gun 4 Berto if he can get by Mosley. Cotto already beat Mosley & doesn't see a need 4 a rematch.

Cotto's fighting spirit is admirable, but in his last few fights he took terrible beatings that hurt him a lot and injured him. I believe he should call it quits or else he could take more punishment and increase his likelihood of developing Parkinson's Syndrome, which could show up later in his life what happened to Coach Roach and Muhammad Ali or make his brain haywire like that of Rolando Navarette.

I think what Miguel needs is his uncle. Evanglista guided him in his boxing career and I think it would be the best for Miguel. Let them set aside personal matters. Forgive and forget. I'm looking forward to see him fighting next year with his uncle as trainer, not Joe Santiago who is foolish and arrogant. Mr. Wilson, I would be happy if you could tell Mayweather Jr. if you have the opportunity interviewing him, kindly tell him this message: "Stop claiming yourself as pound for pound because you choose easy opponents to keep your unbeaten record. You're not a tested fighter unlike Pacman. You're not a gentleman either, unlike Miguel." Thanks and more power Mr. Glenn Wilson.

Of course Cotto can still fight, he's not yet done. He losed to Pacquiao because of Pacquiao speed and quick movement. Also their game plan worked perfectly against Cotto that Joe Santiago wasn't not able to anticipate or solved the problem. Cotto need to hire experienced trainer and Santiago will be a good water boy.

I salute Miguel Cotto for his gallant stand in his fight against the Pacman. I believe Miguel can still fight in the future. But I think his next fight should be first against Margarito to remove the stigma of that fateful loss. Beating Margarito will restore his self-confidence and self-esteem. Miguel also needs to assess and overhaul his team. He should also settle his dispute with Uncle Evangelista to avoid training distractions and to have a clear peace of mind. I think he can be a great champion again. Mabuhay Manny!

Hey., Bernabe "Abe" Concepcion, you still has a score to settle with. When you knocked-out Luevano after the bell rang, that was the most stupid thing I've ever seen in boxing. Worse than throwing a punch below the belt during a fight.

The excuse of not hearing the bell sound was absurd and not acceptable. It's plain "stupidity".
