Prestigious exposure: "60 Minutes" to profile Manny Pacquiao

You must know the old joke about the guy who was so slow that it took him an hour and a half to watch the seminal CBS TV magazine show, "60 Minutes."

Well, the long running Sunday night program is zeroing in on Pinoy Idol Manny Pacquiao and it's no joke.

Promoter Bob Arum said CBS is going to start shooting material next Sunday at Coach Freddie Roach's funky Wild Card Gym in a scruffy section of Hollywood.

Maybe the CBS cameras can get some pithy quotes about Megamanny from that kid in Las Vegas, that Mayweather character.

"It just shows that interest in Manny has transcended sports, gone beyond that," Arum said by phone Sunday from his Las Vegas home.

"Good Morning America on the ABC network is also going to do something on Manny. It is really phenomenal how the interest is widening on Pacman."

The popular program does the occasional sports related profile, interview or story but not many.

AP Photo

For example, basketball superstars Michael Jordan and LeBron James have been put under the "60 Minutes" media microscope.

It was not immediately known which of the "60 Minutes" reporters has been assigned to interview Pacquiao. I've been told the Pacquiao piece won't air until next fall.

Morley Safer, the late Ed Bradley, legendary Mike Wallace among the reporters for "60 Minutes," the CBS TV staple (USA Today Photo)

Off the top of my alleged head, the last "60 Minutes" boxing related piece was likely one on Mike Tyson but I will have to check that.

It will be interesting to see if the profile airs before Pacman's March 13 bout in Dallas against Joshua Clottey.

On another front, Arum said that interest in the Mayweather-Shane Mosley bout May 1 (Las Vegas) is no detrimient to Pacman.

"Absolutely it is something that will just add interest to Manny's fight in Texas and what he might do after that if he can beat the tough Clottey."

Arum repeated his earlier statements that "over 30,000 tickets" have been sold for the Pacman-Clottey bout at the Cowboys football stadium in Arlington, Texas.

From Wikipedia on "60 Minutes":

60 Minutes is an American television newsmagazine, which has run on CBS since 1968. The program was created by long-time producer Don Hewitt who set it apart by using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. It has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life, and has garnered numerous awards over the years, including 78 Emmys (as of 2007)[1] . It is considered by many to be the preeminent investigative television program in the United States.

marley, you should interview the people behind the scenes at CBS and not get some BS quote from Arum and find the real reason for the piece Is it his fighting skills or his attempt at being an athelete and politician. This story brings you down to the ranks of a TV critic, and a lackey for Arum rather than the exceptional reporter we know you are. We need the facts not some conjecture by the Promoter.

Roberto, Just so you know 1 person doesn't do it.. from an insider ...there is something else whether postive or negative going on behind the scenes. So if it is you that brought this to light you may reconsider taking the credit especially if the reason is something neagtive which was made public before the last fight

To Roberto: Did you really told CBS to check about Manny pacquiao. Dude, they will do their homework before they featured Pacquiao. And Pacquiao should be seen by everybody even not a fanatic with boxing because Manny is in his position now because of his hardword, perseverance, discipline, God-fearing person and above all believe that he can do it. Manny is an example of a person that can do everything he wants in life as long as he do it honest way. Manny is not a dirty fighter. He is a gentleman and humble even to his opponents. You should be proud of him because he is not fooling you. He is not a cheater. You will entertain the way he fights because it is his natural power, and not a xylocaine or steroids. I hope you are not a hater particularly to the Asians. Go Manny!! That is the fruit of his hardwork and for the love of boxing and he even dedicated his fight with Cotto to the people who love boxing.

Roberto, 1 person doesn't peak the interest.from an insider.. Usually it is something either positive or negative in the behind the scence. Don't take credit if it is something negative, such as we found out before the last fight. It may turn out that this might be a piece designed to invoke controversy rather than to highlight his skill.. again be careful what you take claim to, it might come back to haunt you..

I do hope that the intent of the person to interview Manny is to find out direct from "the horse's mouth" the ingredients that have brought him success that reverberates around the world, not to make insinuations or create doubts in the mind of the boxing fans.

The interviewer has to be down-to-earth in the interview unlike other media men who feast on the controversy espoused by the Mayweather team. That way, the "60 Minutes" will serve as inspiration not only to boxers but to any person who is faced with, or could face difficulties and/or adversity in the fulfillment of his dreams.

I do hope that the world will see Manny as what he really is and not what some quarters try to paint him to be.

I hope they do a detailed account of the whole drug fiasco coz the only ones that'll look like the 'Fool's is the Fraud /GBP camp. They will be exposed in the media on 'PrimeTime' T.V. of the types of things people will do to try and avoid a fight they know they can't win. Say all you want Fraud fans. Fraud's style is to use up all the minutes till the end. Manny's, well. We all know how many devastating knock outs the guys got. And I don't blame Fraud for being afraid to step in the ring with a man on a mission. Especially after all the accusations from them. With a lawsuit still in tow, I'm not too sure how soon we'll see Fraud man up and fight Manny. First he has to get by Shame. A fight that's 10 years too late. Still, Mosely will destroy Frauds ego and send him to the canvas for the first time. Then it's all downhill from there. Fraud fans, get a hold of yourselves. Time to start accepting the fact that your man WILL lose to Shame Mosely, 10 years too late...

To all pundits and attention getters out there...Manny Pacquiao earned this limelight. Nobody except himself funneled him to celebrity status. It is befitting that he be featured in any
world magazine. This is why a lot of people are envious especially Floyd "the insecure" Mayweather. Those who claim credit for all of these will answer to the truth. When truth prevails, the deceiters, liars, and culprits will be wiped out of this planet. Only the good will remain. One of them is Pac.

Manny's presence alone on that show is enough to make people happy. with or without english manny is a man of few words.

Leave the talking to floyd maywether, he is good at that.

    2. His work ethics
    3. His polital aspirations to help his people (very noble)
    4. Of course the nonsensical assumations of ped use.
    5. His humble demeanor considering all the bad publicity from athletes.

Pacquaio is popular beacause of boxing not because of his bad english. there is a wannabe boxer out there who speaks good english & who is always appearing on talkshows to please everybody but in the end, most of the people don't believe him.

That boxer talks too much, spending million of saliva per interview.. he is pretending to be popular but he doesn't hold any championship belt, he is not the #1 pound 4 pound, he is not the boxer of the decade, he doesn't have product endorsements as in he is really nothing..

So boxing is not about speaking good english.

    Boxing is a contact sport.

Manny Pacquiao believes in fate having been born in a culture marked by belief in superpowers and superstition. This explains his abhorence to shed blood so close to the fight. It is not that he is taking drugs and wants to hide it to cheat. It is just that he believes that shedding blood saps his power and that it would make him vulnerable.

There is nothing scientific in this and this may never be understood by people living in the parts of the world.

This is not definitely an ambush interview which Manny has no idea of all the questions. But if in case Manny answers their questions sometimes out of the blow, so is that a big problem. He's a boxer and not a lawyer or a doctor anyway. This is not about how good he answers these questions or how good he speaks English language, as long as Manny's in there answering questions about him and boxing, people will listen to him.
